A Solders Duty in Guests of the Nation Essay examples -- European Lit

War evokes different emotions and feelings for many people. Some argon drafted and hale to serve, others volunteer their lives for a cause they believe in and some never even see a battle ground. Some live, some die, others are captured and last prisoners or hostages. But one thing is certain, for those who have actually seen war know first hand that it has the power to change and in most cases it does secure that. In Frank OConnors Guests of the Nation, two British soldiers are captured by the Irish Republic Army. Two young Irish soldiers are assigned to guard the captives. The British earn the trust and friendship of their young captors. Until one day the call of duty forces the Irish to carry out orders that forever change their perspective on the war and the duty that accompanies. In Guests of the Nation, OConnor uses six elements of fiction to illustrate the conflict associated with the responsibility of duty and ones personal morals in the circumstance of war.Although this is a taradiddle of war and there is obviously external conflict between the opposing countries, it is the internal conflict of the Irish soldiers Bonaparte and Noble that help the reader commiserate how the weight of duty ultimately defeats personal morals during war. It is Bonaparte and Nobles duty as an Irish soldiers in the IRA (Irish Republic Army) to guard the two captured British soldiers. Bonaparte feels the two men do not even need guarding, that they would not flee given the chance. He and Noble both have croak bored with docile cottage life and would rather be out in the action fighting. Bonaparte soon finds out that he and Noble are going to be relived of there guarding duties but not how either of them had anticipated. It was the... ... of something like this happening. Now he begins to feel a dilemma between what his duty mogul be to his country and how that duty will ultimately win out over any moral dilemma he might have to the men. completely five characters in this story are faced with dilemma be true to ones self or ones country. Although war is defiantly a divider it in like manner has the power to bring together under moral and personal circumstances. War is what brought these men together and it is what ultimately lead the physical death of Hawkins and Belcher, but it as well as lead to a little piece of Noble and Bonaparte dying too. This war forever changed the lives of four men because the duty of war was held in to a higher place morals and friendships.Works CitedOConnor, Frank. Guests of the Nation. Chapter 11 Question 41.What term denotes penalisation by execution of someone officially judged to have committed a serious crime? The term that denotes the punishment by execution of someone officially judged to have committed a serious crime is capital punishment. smashing punishment is now defined as when a person commits a serious crime such as first-degree murder or for intentional cleansing of a police officer. In the past times the Western world used capital punishment for crimes such as witchcraft, rape, treason, kidnapping, murder, and many other acts that were deemed immoral offenses. Until recent decades, a lot of states in the United States of America practiced this form of punishment, but many of them have decided to use capital sentences aka stopping point penalty for more serious crimes such as the case of State of NH vs. Michael Addison which involved the intentional killing of a Manchester N.H. police officer because of the controversial arguments that surrounds the honorable concerns with the death penalty sentence. Unfortunately, the judicial system has too many flaws and is not 100% fool proof to prevent the unjustifiable conviction and execution of a wrongly accused person so most convicted death row inmates spend many years in jail before the capital punishment sentence is carried out, to allow the p roundr legal rights of the accused to be carried out. The methods of execution that has been used through the many years are Hanging- it is the method that a rope noose is put around the criminals neck and a platform they are standing on was removed from beneath them. Firing squad- a group of armed shooters lined up and the accused would stand, blindfolded and upon command the armed shooters would shoot several rounds ... ...Marriage. CNS countersign.com. The Physics of Soccer :: physics sport sports soccer football

Rolling Motion and FrictionSuppose you kick a soccer screw gawk without giving it any spin. Your foot, therefore, buckle unders the twine an initial speed (v) and an initial angular speed of 0. Since grass is not frictionless, the ball initially slides across the field, then starts to rotate and, eventually, starts rolling without slipping. A soccer ball rolls without slipping when its center-of-mass speed equals its angular speed (around its center of mass). OK, now suppose you want to kick the ball so that it immediately starts rolling without slipping. How? You would give the ball topspin by striking the ball a distance (s) above an imaginary horizontal line that passes through the balls center. But where? ANSWER s=0.4R. You would notice the ball a little less than half the radius of the ball above its center line. When two objects slide across one another, they exert a frictional force against each other. These forces are always tangent to the surfaces. A soccer ball and its i nteraction with the field is an example of this. The frictional force is reverse the direction that the ball is traveling. Physics gives us the following equation f=mN for objects that slide against one another where the frictional force (f) is equal to the upward normal force that the surface exerts on the ball (N) multiplied by the coefficient of friction (m). The coefficient of friction is not a constant, but will vary with the ball and surface type. The more friction there is between the ball and the field, the slower the ball will move after a bounce. Balls that skid, on the other hand, do not generate as much friction and subsequently do not slow down as much. So, the coefficient of friction tells us how fast (or slow) a ball will travel The higher the coefficient, the slower the ball. A device similar to the Stimpmeter, which is used to measure the speed of a golf green, could measure a soccer fields coefficient of friction by rolling a small ball on grass and measuring the distance it travels before stopping. Projectile MotionWhen garden rocket motion is treated in basic physics courses, the influence of air resistance is often neglected in the calculations and the trajectory of a projectile becomes a parabola where the horizontal velocity component is contant and the vertical component is subject to gravity. However, for someone watching a game of soccer, it is clear that the motion of a soccer ball is governed not only by gravity, but also by air resistance.
