Pucks Mischief Essay Puck may be mischievous, but he is not cruel or evil. Do you agree? I agree to a large extent that; although Puck may be mischievous and playful, it does not mean that he is inherently cruel and evil. Mischievousness, implies a sort of roguish fondness for trickery and pranks, this however does not necessarily dictate that Puck is evil at heart. At the outset, the first impression the audience receives of Puck is that of a merry prankster and not a hard-hearted plotter who wishes ill. The first fairy the audience meets describes Puck as a shrewd and knavish sprite referring directly to his mischievous spirit. The fairy describes Pucks pranks of making the drink to bear no barm and Puck himself talks about how he jest[s] to Oberon, and make[s] him smile and even pretends to be a stool only to disappear when one wants to sit; all of which though they may sometimes be unkind, do not mean any serious harm. Thus from the beginning, Shakespeare creates the impression of a character that delights in mischief, but does not go out of his way to harm people. Though Puck catalyses the conflict between the lovers, it is not because of evil intent that he does this. In fact if anyone should be deemed cruel or evil in A Midsummer Nights Dream, it should be Oberon. As it was due to carrying out Oberons orders, Puck caused the confusion amongst the lovers seen in Act 3 Scene 2. It is doubtless that Puck was indeed the one who anoint[s] Lysanders eyes instead of Demetrius, causing Lysander to pursue Helena to honour [her] and be [her] knight, creating a tangle of lovers when all four finally meet in Act 3 Scene 2. However, he does this obliviously, as seen in how he later admits that he had mistook Lysander for Demetrius because Oberon identified Demetrius by the Athenian garments he hath on. Thus going to show that he had no intention of causing the trouble he did. Additionally, he is willing to make amends for the trouble he has caused, showing that he meant no permanent harm. After finding out that he had laid the love juice on some true-loves sight causing a true love [to] turnd false, by causing Lysander to fall for Helena, he immediately commits himself to being swifter than an arrow from tartars bow in searching for Helena to make things right. Later he honestly admits his mistake to Oberon, pleading Oberon King of shadows to believe [him that he] mistook. Thus by willingly admitting his mistake and swiftly making amends, Puck shows that he had no intent to harm the lovers at all, shedding light on his character that he is not intrinsically evil. Furthermore, Puck shows compassion for the lovers in his actions, revealing a somewhat unexpected benevolent nature. This is seen when he mistakes Lysanders reason for sleeping so far from Hermia as lack[ing]-love and courtesy. He echoes similar sentiments when he comments that Cupid is a knavish lad, Thus to make poor females mad at the end of all the chaos of Act 3 Scene 2. Similarly, although Puck leads Demetrius and Lysander Up and down, up and down, seeming to goad them, he does so for good reason- in order to lead them away from each other to prevent a fight. Hence through these instances, Puck shows himself to be even less of the hot-headed mischief maker. However, Puck does show a streak of cruelty in his dealings with the craftsmen. His attitude to the craftsmen and Bottom in particular is scornful, calling them the shallowest thicksin of that barren sort. This conflicts with the audiences previous encounters with the craftsmen, which though show them to be shallow they are certainly not barren, and The Most Lamentable Comedy and Most Cruel Death of Pyramus and Thisbe they persevered in practicing is proof of this. Thus Puck comes across here as very caustic and snide, which may lead the audience to think of him as a wicked character. He even gloats to Oberon about how he had An asss noll fixed on Bottoms head, which reveals a certain malicious streak in him. Nonetheless, Pucks conclusion of the play emphasizes that he means no ill will. In his closing statement, he says to the audience that If you pardon, we shall amend, for he is an honest Puck. Highlighting yet again that although he may delight in and make a sport out of mischief, he means no real injury, for he is no cruel fairy.

This song was created by Don McLean, and became phenomenal hit in 1971, charting almost four weeks on the billboards. But there is more than saying goodbye to Ms. American Pie, which in itself is a symbol and image to the profound interpretation of the song. The message pierces more than a county boy strumming a guitar, or it speaks beyond the farewell to an unknown lady.Don McLean, in his official website, made interesting comments regarding the song. While he allowed the song to be interpreted in various lenses, he himself confessed that the song was an allusion to historical or factual events, people and places that his song discussed. The seeming relevance of this allusion is the representation of American Pie, as the symbol of the ââ¬Å"young and vibrant Americansâ⬠. As McLean admitted, ââ¬Å"the song was written as my attempt at an epic song about America, and I used the imagery of music and politics to do that. Also, I was influenced by the Sgt. Pepper album, and the American Pie album was my attempt to do that, but the song totally overshadowed the albumâ⬠(McLean, 2000, cited www.don-mclean. com). Thus, the ââ¬Å"American Pieâ⬠is an image of America, and the personaââ¬â¢s attempt to picture the America as it strives to be, and it might become. But contrasting words will reveal that, if the persona illustrates ââ¬Å"American Pieâ⬠as the young America, then why a bid of farewell? Is the persona, trying to say goodbye to future America has? Again, it can be viewed skeptically, the young dream, as mentioned earlier, the wishful thinking must not be allowed to vanish, it must move, it must sojourn.The next lines driving the chevy, ââ¬Å"but the l evee was dryâ⬠, this illustrates the life of the young America to rise, go or, to go farther, or move on. But the dry levee was said to illustrate the painful realities of life as we move along. Even driving oneself to that dream, the levees of experiences and circumstance would always be dry. A realism is seem to be presented, that life is not a bed of roses, rather it was a long winding trip to the end. The melancholic lines continuously read: ââ¬Å" The goodââ¬â¢ol boys were drinking, whiskey and rye, saying thisââ¬â¢ll be the day that I dieâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ .Presenting the realistic point of view, the good old boys verbalized the promising young people, yet with the painful realities, they have succumbed to the defeatists attitude of lurking themselves, as pictured by the words, ââ¬Å"drinking, whiskey and ryeâ⬠. The drinking symbolizes solitary, loneliness and isolation. This thought bolstered the point of death, and surrender by proclaiming ââ¬Å"thisââ¬â¢ll be the day that I dieâ⬠. Two oppositions may come into the picture.First, wishful thinking and dreams versus the paralyzing truths of life, we may succumb to surrender and declare our defeat with our own deathââ¬âdemise of our dreams, our lives, our hopes. Yet, this could pose as challenge, that the farewell to Miss American Pie, may be a welcome to herââ¬âas we welcome the challenges and bitter moments in our lives with energy and courage. Historical Themes Schindlerââ¬â¢s List Essay
Light can still be found even in the darkest of times; Oskar Schindler shows this through his actions during the Holocaust. In the novel Oskar Schindlerââ¬â¢s portrayed his motives and ways one man can help thousands of the struggling Polish Jews. What he did absolutely contradict what his country and leader wanted; they were planning to eradicate all Jews from the face of the Earth. By using his factory as a place for the helpless Jews to work, he avoided thousands from being sent to the concentration camps where they would work as slaves and eventually die. At first Schindler liked the idea of Polish workers but after he found out what Hitlerââ¬â¢s true intentions were he quickly felt remorse for them and determined himself to save as many as humanly possible. He began employing more and more Jews, he saved thousands of lives but ruined his business in doing so. Schindlerââ¬â¢s List by Thomas Keneally brilliantly portrayed the courage and human spirit in one man in the midst of terrible evil. Schindler proved the difference that one man can make by using his wit against the Nazis. Without the historical validity incorporated into the novel, the themes and overall story would not be up as great as it is already. Hitlerââ¬â¢s Nazi regime ran a dictatorship with Adolf Hitler at the very head of the tyranny. Hitlerââ¬â¢s master plan led to hopefully conquering the world and creates his version of society with perfect people and culture. Starting with the invasion of Poland he took Jews from their homes and forced them to do tedious work as slaves in concentration camps claiming that it was for their own protection. He tore families apart, and treated them with indignity in the camps by giving them very little food and forcing public nudity. Entire clans or families died at the order of the Nazis and no mercy could be seen from them as they killed the Jews in ways which would be seen as cruel and evil, even to humans. These events led to the deaths of six million Jewish citizens during World War II. Jewsââ¬â¢ murders took place in many various ways; one way was in gas chambers disguised as showers. Corpses and left over residues burned in huge infernos that made it snow ashes of people. Human remains were also being used for the benefit of the Nazis; they used skin and lamp shades, hair as insulation, and skin also as a type of paper. Many Jewish families were desperate to not find themselves in the terrible camps that they did everything they could not to be captured and sent to their demise. Thomas Keneally describes the setting of Germany in the novel very accurately to the time period, and also the social status that some people had at the time. Germans lived being treated very normally by all soldiers of Hitlerââ¬â¢s rule, but all others were treated as second class citizens or actually sub human. In the eyes of the Nazis Jews must be the lowest of the low to the, they were considered not as human but as some kind of sub species below all other humans. This aspect that was included in the novel is very true to history in Germany for 1943. Owning businesses or running one was against the law for any Jewish citizen. Many businesses burned down to the ground at the hand of the soldiers, ruining even wealthy land owners and workers. During World War II over six million Jews were killed by the Nazis and that is a fact included into the novel also. After the rest of European Jews heard about the genocide of Jews they and many others began hiding and helped hide people to avoid capture. People did everything to save themselves and others, some hid in the attics of Germans or in the barn of farmers. They started to become desperate to hide; Oskar Schindler used his very own factory where he produced pottery as a way to protect the Polish Jews. Oskar Schindlerââ¬â¢s career led him to becoming a business man and entrepreneur in the pots and pans industry. His factory had become very successful because of the labor force provided by the Jews that were crowded into cities by the Nazis. In 1942 the Nazis really did begin to round up all the available Jews into ghettos or slums in the city to contain them like in the concentration camps. At the same time as Oskar Schindler a lady named Irena Sendler helped to save over two thousand Jewish children from the ghettos that the Nazis set up for them. . She and many others helped humanity by using their intellect, courage, and resources. If an event like this happened in any other time period it just would not be the same. Thomas Keneallyââ¬â¢s Schindlerââ¬â¢s List showed how one person can make a giant difference for many people. His novelââ¬â¢s historical aspects were accurate in most ways, it helped to enforce the themes in the story of the human spirit and one man can make a change. Throughout history it has been proven that if one person does one change it can help thousands of peoplesââ¬â¢ lives forever. Adolf Hitler and his attempt to eradicate the Jewish population is the darkest time in history of humanity. But still, light can be found in the midst of total darkness and evil.

esl essays I chose to do my observation on a small (12 students) elementary ESL class. The students in this class ranged from second grade up to fifth grade and all are fairly fluent in English, but come from homes that use Spanish as the primary language. The day began with a rehearsal of a play this class will be performing for the first graders. This play calls for the children to read, understand, and memorize the parts of such characters as the narrator, a donkey, cat, rooster, robbers, police, dog, and pigs. By doing this they have been exposed to many animals and have done an enormous amount of authentic learning just through their own personal experiences. Each of the twelve children was given the script and they went through the play working on the memorization of the lines and pronunciation of the words. I was impressed with the number of students who had their entire part memorized and who could easily read and recite the English words in perfect sentences. After going throug h the play three times the class moved onto a singing activity that they did together. This included reading the words to the songs Loud Blows the Wind, My True Blue Buddy, and Lots and Lots of Stars via a large book in front of the class. Mrs. Campbell then called on a few to read the song individually as another used the pointer to follow along. Once confident with the words and meaning of the song they would put it to music and the whole class would sing the song together at the top of their lungs. Through the singing of these songs the students were using a variety of everyday words along with different descriptive words, and most animals/foods imaginable. They were gaining experience in reading, widening their vocabulary, practicing their sounds and having a great time all in one exercise. To that end, avoid expletives and passive construction and emphasize agents, as described in the discussion and demonstrated in the revision following each example. 1. There are several ways to achieve the desired balance. This sentence begins with an expletive, a filler word such as there (or it) followed by a verb that- for better or worse- enables a writer to get started on a sentence without really saying anything other than supporting the notion that something exists. ââ¬Å"The desired balance can be achieved in several waysâ⬠is an improvement because it states the proposition more directly and immediately introduces ââ¬Å"desired balance,â⬠the central concept. However, it is still passive, with no reference to who or what can accomplish the action. Better yet, introduce the agent: ââ¬Å"We can achieve this desired balance in several ways.â⬠2. There should be increasing rigor applied.à A better rendering of this idea is ââ¬Å"Increasing rigor should be applied,â⬠but although the expletive has been eliminated, the sentence is still passive. One solution is to strip the wording down to an imperative, as in ââ¬Å"Apply increasing rigor,â⬠but this sentence, devoid of context, is likely too severe. Better yet, apply context- who should apply rigor? If the text pertains to management, say so: ââ¬Å"Management should apply increasing rigor.â⬠Simplifying the adjective and inserting an adverb renders the sentence less concise but perhaps more accurate: ââ¬Å"Management should continuously apply more rigor.â⬠3. Over the last few years, there has been an increasing concern over the protection of individualsââ¬â¢ personal data in relation to lawfulness, security, and transparency of the data processing taking place. The modifying phrase that begins this sentence is appropriate, but the presence of that phrase and an expletive delays any substantive wording until about one-third of the way into this thirty-plus-word sentence. Placing a concept immediately after the introductory phrase improves the flow of the sentence: ââ¬Å"Over the last few years, concern has increased over the protection of individualsââ¬â¢ personal data in relation to lawfulness, security, and transparency of the data processing taking place.â⬠(Or ââ¬Å"Over the last few years, concern over the protection of individualsââ¬â¢ personal data in relation to lawfulness, security, and transparency of the data processing taking place has increased.â⬠Even better, begin with protection, rather than concern about protection, as the central concept: ââ¬Å"Over the last few years, protection of individualsââ¬â¢ personal data in relation to lawfulness, security, and transparency of the data processing taking place has increasingly concerned government officials.â⬠However, again, to make the sentence more direct, consider opening the main clause with a word or phrase describing the concerned entity: ââ¬Å"Over the last few years, government officials have become increasingly concerned about protection of individualsââ¬â¢ personal data in relation to lawfulness, security, and transparency of the data processing taking place.â⬠Want to improve your English in five minutes a day? Malpractice Malpractice is the absence of the required standard of care by a professional, which include the knowledge, abilities, and specialized skills of a profession. Malpractice results due to the failure of the professional to abide by the established principles of the profession. The plaintiff, in a malpractice situation, should show that the other individual did not follow the standard of his profession. Ash et al (2006, p.130) found that the expected standard of care from a professional is much higher compared to that of the other individuals. It is the failure the lack of skill to abide to a standard of care in which a rational man in the same position would have observed. In a medical malpractice situation, a plaintiff must establish appropriate care to determine the practitioners conduct and an actual breach of the required standard of care by the practitioner.
